Amanda Schrauben Selected as KDL Trustee
The Englehardt Library has been a part of Amanda Schrauben’s life for as long as she’s lived in Lowell. A lifelong reader, she soon learned to appreciate that the library was a place for more than just books.
“I initially liked the programming, especially when the kids were young, to get out of the house,” she says.
As a young mother, she brought her sons to a progression of Babytime, Toddler Time and Storytime sessions. The free activities not only broke up the day but also introduced her to other mothers and families in the area.
Now, her boys volunteer as part of the summer Teen Crew, and Schrauben herself is taking her love of the library to the next level. She applied for an open position on the Kent District Library Board of Trustees and was selected as the Region 4 representative.

The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
My love for the trees and the flora that carpet this Earth has grown even stronger with the reading of this richly satisfying book. Part historical fiction and part ecological fiction - this book featured a fig tree as a main character and I loved it. Lyrically written and carefully researched, "The Island of Missing Trees" was a true joy to read.
I learned so much of the more recent history of Cyprus that I never knew. A visit to this beautiful island now rests high up on my bucket list. If you have read and enjoyed "Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest" by Suzanne Simard, "The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate: Discoveries from a Secret World" by Peter Wohlleben, and/or "The Overstory" by Richard Powers, pick up this book and settle in with a cup of tea for a good long read!
